Anthracite, being the least dense, is the lightest filtration medium per unit volume, followed by sand, and garnet, which is the densest.

The rationale for utilizing media with different densities is that during the backwashing process, the lightest and largest particles (anthracite) will naturally rise to the top of the filter, while the medium-sized particles (sand) will settle in the middle layer, and the heaviest and smallest particles (garnet) will accumulate at the bottom.
